A Step-by-Step Guide to Clean a Green Swimming Pool

pool cleaning

Owning a swimming pool is easy, but keeping it "swim ready" is a big job. A dirty pool is usually green due to algae growth, which appears due to low chlorine levels.

Other factors that make a pool infested with algae are when it is exposed to high heat, heavy rain, and poor circulation of water. No one wants a dirty pool.

However, don't worry because we will show you how to ensure your pool is always clean with crystalline water at all times.

Here are 9 steps to follow to clean a green swimming pool.

  1. Net out any debris in the pool.
  2. Clean the skimmers and replace the nets.
  3. Brush the walls and floor of the pool.
  4. Clean the inbuilt pump filter.
  5. Backwash the filter.
  6. Test and balance the pool water pH.
  7. Apply shock treatment by adding Chlorine.
  8. Place a flocculant in one of the skimmer baskets.
  9. Backwash the sand filter again.

Step No. 1: Net out any debris in the pool.

Debris in green pool water includes leaves, pollen, twigs, and plastic. Begin the cleaning by removing any floating debris from the pool using a pool skimmer.

A pool skimmer is a net that is attached to the pole. The skimmer will enable you to collect bigger objects that the filter cannot collect.

If your pool has an automatic skimmer, ensure you check it to ascertain that it collects any floating debris.

Step No. 2: Clean the skimmers and replace the nets.

A green pool is a sign that your pool has not been used for a long time, which means a lot of debris will be collected by the skimmer.

The second step is to clean the skimmers and be sure to replace the nets with new ones.

When you clean the skimmer, it will prevent clogging and damage to the filtration system if you are using an automatic skimmer.

Step No. 3: Brush the walls and floor of the pool.

Next, ensure you brush the walls and floor of the pool to remove algae that may have attached to these surfaces.

When you brush the pool's walls and the floor, it will prevent the buildup of algae. This will prevent the algae spores from attaching to the surfaces and growing.

Always remember that it is better to prevent the growth of algae than treat it.

Step No. 4: Clean the inbuilt pump filter

At this point, you must remember to clean the pump filter. When it is clean, it will be able to filter out any debris with ease.

If the pump filter is not clean, the pool water will always be dirty, and eventually, the pump will be damaged.

Step No. 5: Backwash the filter

Backwash the filter depending on the manufacturer's manual to remove any mineral and organic buildup.

Once the filter is clean, the filtration system will work at a maximum flow rate.

Step No. 6: Test and balance the pool water pH.

Test the pH of the pool water as you pay special attention to the chlorine levels. The Chlorine will only work correctly if the pH is balanced.

When Chlorine levels are low, the pool water will turn green. The free Chlorine should be between 1-4ppm. Restore these levels to the right measures if they are off.

When the pH levels are too high, it will cause skin irritation to the swimmers and even corrode the metal parts in the pool.

Be sure to keep the pH levels checked even after cleaning the pool.

Step No. 7: Apply shock treatment by adding chlorine.

Shock treatment is how Chlorine is added to the pool water to raise the levels of free Chlorine.

This is important to prevent the growth of contaminants such as algae, bacteria, and chloramines which make the pool water green.

Depending on the product you are using, follow the instructions indicated and add Chlorine as per the size of your pool.

Step No. 8: Place a flocculant in one of the skimmer baskets.

When the pool is green, the levels of dirt are at the extreme. A flocculant is a chemical added to the pool water when other methods won't clean it up.

Add a flocculant to the skimmer so that it may bind the smaller particles within the pool water to make them larger for ease of collection by the filter.

The particles will sink to the bottom of the pool, and they can also be vacuumed out.

Step No. 9: Backwash the sand filter again.

Your pool water will have cleared up, and it is time to do the final cleaning of the sand filter.

It is important to backwash the sand filter because of the large amounts of dirt collected from the pool.

Be sure to also replace the skimmer nets if they become dirty again. Ensure you have tidied up the pool area once you are done.
